“The Kabuki” is a ballet inspired by the “Chushingura Legend”, the most famous of kabuki stories, of the 47 ronin samurai who sacrifice their lives to avenge their master’s infamy. The first full-length ballet that the great master choreographer, Maurice Béjart, created exclusively for the Tokyo Ballet in 1986, it has been performed 146 times in 25 cities spanning 14 nations world wide, receiving great acclaim around the globe at such premiere opera houses as the Paris Opera, La Scala, Vienna State Opera, Bolshoi Theatre, Maryinsky Theatre, Berlin State Opera.

A present day youth travels in time to the era of the samurai, to live as Yuranosuke, the leader of the avengers, successfully avenging his master and dying together with the 47 Samurai in a ritual group suicide. The ballet incorporates Kabuki movements, melding the past and present on a stage where samurais come alive with balletic leaps and turns, and young maidens with painted faces handle sumptuous kimonos like evening gowns. This ballet, which has touched hearts around the world, is Maurice Béjart’s great gift to Japan, and to a tradition he deeply loves.
