The Tokyo Ballet returns to Italy | December 2026
The Tokyo Ballet is delighted to be returning to Italy on tour in December 2026, following its successful tour in 2024. Since its Italian debut in 1973, the Company has toured to Italy for 18 times and to Turin three times, but this will be its first visit to the city in 40 years.
The Tokyo Ballet presents a mixed program in six performances for the first time at the prestigious Teatro Regio Torino. The program will fully showcase the artistry and virtuosity of the Company's dancers: Prologue and Act I from KAGUYAHIME, The Kingdom of the Shades from La Bayadère, and Le Sacre du Printemps.
KAGUYAHIME, ballet in a prologue and three acts, was choreographed for The Tokyo Ballet by Jo Kanamori, one of the most prominent Japanese choreographers, and world premiered in 2023. Inspired by the oldest Japanese surviving piece of prose fiction The Tale of Bamboo Cutter, Kanamori has wonderfully drawn universal themes, love and desire, to the music of Claude Debussy. The ballet's prologue and the first act will make its international debut at the Teatro Regio Torino.
La Bayadère by Marius Petipa is one of the iconic works in The Tokyo Ballet's repertoire that showcases artistry and technique of both soloists and ensemble of the Company. On this occasion, one of the ballet's highlights, The Kingdom of the Shades, will be performed.
Having cherished exceptionally close relationship with Maurice Béjart, The Tokyo Ballet has 22 works by the choreographic giant in its repertoire, including two full-length ballets created for the Company, The Kabuki and M. Le Sacre du Printemps celebrates the primal power of life to the vibrant score of Igor Stravinsky that Maurice Béjart fantastically visualized through his audacious choreography.
The Tokyo Ballet has given 799 interntional performances in 158 cities across 33 countries and marks its 37th international tour and 800th overseas performance at the Teatro Regio Torino.
