Cast Changes: The Stuttgart Ballet's Onegin and Lady of the Camellias

It is with regret that we announce that Principal Dancer of the Stuttgart Ballet Anna Osadcenko has had to withdraw from the Company's tour to Japan due to illness.

For Onegin performance on Sunday 3 November, she will be replaced by Elisa Badenes in the role of Tatiana.

For Lady of the Camellias, to offer the finest way to deliver the best performances for Japanese audiences in this situation, Artistic Director Tamas Detrich has decided to change the casting of the two principal roles, Marguerite Gautier and Armand Duval, on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 November: Rocio Aleman and Martí Paixà will now perform on Saturday 9, and Elisa Badenes and Friedemann Vogel will perform again on Sunday 10 November. Principal Dancer David Moore will dance as Gaston Rieux instead of Armand on Saturday 9. Please see below for the detailed casting.

We apologize to our valued audiences who have been anticipating the appearance of Anna Osadcenko and the original casting, but appreciate everyone's kind understanding for the unavoidable situation. At the same time, we hope you will enjoy the exuberant performances with the new casting led by Artistic Director Tamas Detrich, who has sent the following statement to the audiences in Japan.

Love for ballet and mother: Béjart's Christmas masterpiece returns for the first time in 7 years.

Casse-Noisette

Ballet in two acts

Choreography Maurice Béjart
Music Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Vincent Scotto, Léon Raiter, Tony Murena, Johann Sebastian Bach
Original Music for Accordion Yvette Horner

On Christmas Eve, a little boy, Bim, is thinking sadly about his dead mother. Suddenly begins a miraculous night as he sees his mother in a dream! Happy family conversations, joyful ballet lessons, training in the boy scouts. Then a huge statue of Venus appears from which his mother comes out. Bim and his mother tenderly dance together a beautiful pas de deux. Bim invites his mother to show her his favorites. Waking up under the fir tree, he finds a present from her... This boy is a young Maurice Béjart whose mother passed away when he was seven.

Tchaikovsky wrote the music of The Nutcracker, looking back on his childhood with nostalgia. Béjart created this ballet in a similar way. Set to one of the three greatest ballet scores, Bejart's Casse-Noisette is one of his masterpieces which reveals the secret of the birth of the great choreographer.

The Tokyo Ballet presents Bejart's Casse-Noisette for the first time in seven years to close the Company's 60th Anniversary Season, paying tribute to the great master and the Company's dear friend. For the special performances, the international star dancer Daniil Simkin will perform as Félix le chat on Friday 7 and Sunday 9 February 2025. Don't miss out!

Maurice Béjart (1927-2007)

Maurice Béjart was born in Marseille on January 1, 1927, the son of French philosopher Gaston Berger. He began his career as a dancer in Vichy in 1946, continued with Janine Charrat, Roland Petit and in London as part of the International Ballet. His career as choreographer started in 1955 as he created his own company in Paris. Following his triumphant success of Le Sacre du Printemps in 1959 in Brussels, Béjart launched Le Ballet du XXe Siècle in 1960 in Brussels. In 1987, it became the Béjart Ballet Lausanne. He created over 300 ballets until his last days of life.

Daniil Simkin

Guest Dancer in the role of Félix le chat

Daniil Simkin stands as one of the most prominent figures in classical ballet, not just for his prowess as a dancer but also as a cultural innovator and creative director dedicated to pushing the boundaries of dance.

Gil Roman

Guest Dancer

After intensive training with Marika Besobrasova, Rosella Hightower and José Ferran, Gil Roman joined Maurice Béjart at le Ballet du XXe Siècle in 1979. After performing the choreographer's most renowned ballets for over thirty years, Gil Roman assumed the artistic direction of the Béjart Ballet Lausanne following Béjart's passing, from 2007 until February 2024.
