In the pale moonlight, the Willis are dancing with mysterious smiles on their pale faces. They are the spirits of young maidens abandoned by faithless lovers and take revenge in the night by making men dance to death by exhaustion.
Based on a popular theme of the Willis in Romantic Era, Giselle is considered to be the pinnacle of Romantic ballets. It was a great hit in the 19th century and quickly became one of the most popular ballets to be staged around the world to this day.
Giselle is an iconic work in The Tokyo Ballet's repertoire, and the Company made its hugely successful Australian debut in 2023, presenting 11 shows: "Precision and polish are at a premium" (Man in Chair), "The attention to details in The Tokyo Ballet's works is breathtaking" (The Blurb), "The corps of 26 dancers achieve magnificent unison and ripple effects" (The Age).
In this revival, First Soloist Ryunosuke Ubukata will make his debut as Albrecht on Sunday 18 May. The artistry of both the soloists and corps de ballet of The Tokyo Ballet in Giselle is not to be missed.
