Cast Change: The Tokyo Ballet's Casse-Noisette

It is with regret that we announce that Guest Dancer Daniil Simkin has had to withdraw from the role of FÉLIX - le chat in Casse-Noisette, due to foot problems. He will be replaced by The Tokyo Ballet's Principal dancer Arata Miyagawa on Friday 7 and Sunday 9 February.

We apologize to our valued audiences who have been anticipating the appearance of Daniil Simkin, but appreciate everyone's kind understanding for the unavoidable situation. Please find the following statement from Daniil Simkin to the audiences in Japan.

Statement from Daniil Simkin
My dear Japanese audience,

with heavy heart, for the first time in almost 20 years, I will need to cancel my shows in Japan. I am saddened and disappointed, but my body cannot fulfill his duty this time.

I was so much looking forward to learning a new role, realize myself in the new choreographic language of the legend that is Maurice Bejart, and share what I found with you, the Japanese audience, that I cherish.

Unfortunately it is not meant to be. My calf muscles and achilles tendon have been very inflamed in the past 2 months and I therefore already have had to cancel various shows. They were getting better and I believed that I could manage. I also canceled a show to concentrate on the new role I was trying to tackle. However, they somehow got inflamed again. If I keep pushing and dancing on this leg, doctors say that I risk ripping my muscle and if this happens I might need to miss a whole year of my career.

In order to create our art we need many things to align - our mind, the conditions, the history of our craft as a base and the body that is at its full physical capacity. Unfortunately that is not the case with me and my body is asking urgently to be taken care of. I cannot deny this right now, especially since I want to continue to be able to give as a dancer for a few more years and especially return to you, my Japanese audience, that I respect and value.

Please understand and forgive me.

With respect and love, - Danii

Birmingham Royal Ballet returns with two of the most exuberant productions in its rich repertoire

Following its triumphant tour in 2018, Birmingham Royal Ballet returns to Japan for the first time under the leadership of Carlos Acosta, from Friday 20 June to Saturday 5 July 2025.

Birmingham Royal Ballet will present two of the most exuberant productions in its rich repertoire: Sir Peter Wright's magnificent production of The Sleeping Beauty, that enchanted the audiences in Japan on the last tour, and former Company Director Sir David Bintley's spectacular fairytale, Cinderella, to be revived in Japan for the first time in 10 years.

Full of demanding choreography, and sumptuous set and costumes, the two productions will be sublime showcases of the outstanding talent and artistry of both the dancers and the Company. They will be joined for the performances of The Sleeping Beauty by Elisa Badenes, a Principal of the Stuttgart Ballet, as Princess Aurora, and Brandon Lawrence, former Birmingham Royal Ballet Principal, now Principal of the Ballett Zürich, as Prince Florimund.

The tour opens on Friday 20 June at Tokyo Bunka Kaikan. The Company also performs The Sleeping Beauty at FENICE SACAY, Sakai and Aichi Prefectural Art Theater, Nagoya.

Pinnacle of Romantic Ballet, Giselle

Giselle

Ballet in two acts

Music Adolphe Adam
Choreography Leonid Lavrovsky after Jean Coralli, Jules Perrot and Marius Petipa
Adaptation (Pas de huit) Vladimir Vasiliev
Set design Alexandre Benois

photo: Koujiro Yoshikawa

In the pale moonlight, the Willis are dancing with mysterious smiles on their pale faces. They are the spirits of young maidens abandoned by faithless lovers and take revenge in the night by making men dance to death by exhaustion.

Based on a popular theme of the Willis in Romantic Era, Giselle is considered to be the pinnacle of Romantic ballets. It was a great hit in the 19th century and quickly became one of the most popular ballets to be staged around the world to this day.

Giselle is an iconic work in The Tokyo Ballet's repertoire, and the Company made its hugely successful Australian debut in 2023, presenting 11 shows: "Precision and polish are at a premium" (Man in Chair), "The attention to details in The Tokyo Ballet's works is breathtaking" (The Blurb), "The corps of 26 dancers achieve magnificent unison and ripple effects" (The Age).

In this revival, First Soloist Ryunosuke Ubukata will make his debut as Albrecht on Sunday 18 May. The artistry of both the soloists and corps de ballet of The Tokyo Ballet in Giselle is not to be missed.
