Béjart's striking masterpiece, The Kabuki, returns in June 2025
The Kabuki
Ballet in two acts
Choreography Maurice Béjart
Music Toshiro Mayuzumi
Set and Costumes Nuno Corte-Real
The Kabuki was the first ballet that Maurice Béjart choreographed for The Tokyo Ballet in 1986. Based on a famous Kabuki play titled Kanadehon Chushingura, it depicts a famous historical event in the eighteenth century, in the Edo period, in which 47 faithful samurai took vengeance for their master. According to Béjart's wishes, music was commissioned to the great Japanese composer Toshiro Mayuzumi and set and costumes to Nuno Corte-Real.
The ballet is not simply a fusion of ballet and traditional Japanese art, but a new art form, or a "theoretical event" as Béjart said, invented through an exceptional collaboration of the two giants, Béjart and Mayuzumi. The Kabuki became one of Béjart's masterpieces and one of the most important works in The Tokyo Ballet's repertoire. Since its world premiere, the Company has presented The Kabuki not only in Japan but also abroad, at prestigious theaters in 28 cities in 15 countries including the Palais Garnier, Wiener Staatsoper, Teatro alla Scala and Royal Opera House, receiving huge acclaim.
Join us for a breathtaking masterpiece that can only be performed by The Tokyo Ballet and also for a celebration of Principal dancer Dan Tsukamoto's recent receipt of the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's 75th Art Encouragement Prize.
