"Kaguyahime" or "The Tale of Bamboo Cutter", the oldest Japanese surviving piece of literature, has long been an inspiration to many artists in various fields. Having studied many of the works, Jo Kanamori choreographs the story set to the music of Claude Debussy. In Act 1, found and raised by kind Okina, Kaguyahime grows up to be a happy and lively girl, and falls in love for the first time with Douji. However, she is separated from Douji and taken to the Court. In Act 2, surrounded by The Mikado, his lawful wife Kagehime and courtiers, Kaguyahime finds herself very lonely. A developing tension between Kaguyahime and the courtiers will be portrayed by a powerful corps de ballet.

Spring and Fall

Choreography John Neumeier
Music Antonín Dvořák - Serenade in E major op. 22
Scenery, Costumes and Lighting John Neumeier

Photo: Kiyonori Hasegawa

John Neumeier's Spring and Fall set to plaintive melody of Dvořák's Serenade for Strings is danced by seven female dancers and ten male dancers to weave a world of mellow lyricism and youthful vividness. While Neumeier was working with music of Dvořák, the words 'spring and fall' suddenly came to his mind. Then he remembered that one of the poems by English poet Gerard Hopkins had the same title. Neumeier decided to borrow the title. Like the poet expresses profounder world than each word literally means, Neumeier portrays a metaphysical world of 'Spring and Fall'. In the ballet, you will savour the various facets of life: joy, sweetness and sorrow.
